Stardeath And White Dwarfs
New Heat
Release date: 7th September 2009
Label: WEA Records
Tipped as a talent to watch following the independent releases of the ‘That’s Cool’ EP and the ‘Toast & Marmalade For Tea / Chemical’ 7” single, Stardeath and White Dwarfs will release their debut album ‘The Birth’ on September 14th on Warner Bros. Records. The Oklahoma quartet – fronted by Dennis Coyne, the nephew of The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne – will precede the album with the release of the download single ‘New Heat’ on September 6th.
Produced by the band with Trent Bell (The Flaming Lips, Chainsaw Kittens), ‘The Birth’ infuses elements of psychedelia and progressive rock with pop melodies. ‘New Heat’ is the album’s most immediately enticing highlight, but ‘I Can’t Get Away’, the title track and ‘Smoking Pot Makes Me Not Want To Kill Myself’ all demonstrate the charm of the band’s unique style. Elsewhere, the likes of ‘The Sea Is On Fire’ and the instrumental ‘Those Who Are From The Sun Return To The Sun’ suggest influences from the likes of Pink Floyd and King Crimson in Stardeath’s strangely intoxicating approach.
The ‘New Heat’ download single will feature a very special bonus track in the shape of the Stardeath and White Dwarfs / Flaming Lips collaborative reinterpretation of the Madonna classic ‘Borderline’.
The accompanying video for the single was directed by Wayne Coyne and can be viewed at: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4020141001/?bctid=ref:A10302B0000895207J
Formed in 2003 by guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Dennis Coyne and bassist/keyboardist Casey Joseph (who was then in his mid-teens), Stardeath and White Dwarfs are completed by drummer Matt Duckworth and guitarist James Young. They released their debut EP ‘That’s Cool’ in 2005 and have played shows with The Flaming Lips, British Sea Power, Band of Horses and Deerhoof.
Stardeath and White Dwarfs mark the release of ‘The Birth’ with their debut UK headline show at the O2 Academy 2 Islington on the very same day. They’re also confirmed to play The End of The Road and Bestival before returning in November to tour with The Flaming Lips.
