The Candle Thieves
Sunshine And Other Misfortunes
Release date: 5th April 2010
Label: Carnival Town Records
The Candle Thieves release their debut album, ‘Sunshine & Other Misfortunes’ on the 5th April 2010, through Carnival Town Records.
Having toured the back gardens of Britain throughout 2009, culminating with a Christmas party show in NYC for a hugely supportive American radio station, The Candle Thieves deliver their debut album, an irresistibly infectious and carefully crafted collection of pop songs.
The Candle Thieves are Scott McEwan and Glockenshiels, a young duo from Peterborough who painlessly handcraft beguiling pop music from an assortment of instruments straight out of Toytown.
Falling from the humble city of Peterborough (which has previously given us members of Erasure and JLS, and the co-founder of Rolls Royce, Sir Henry Royce) Scott and Glock are at odds with making the best of a bad situation, choosing to channel the importance of tragedy and the subtly of beauty in equal measure.
Friends since loaning out the same library books at college, Scott and Glock study in all things make believe. Their live shows are all-spectral affairs, where glitter dust settles on an array of melodicas, glockenspiels, toy grand pianos, keyboards, and acoustic loveliness, and our maestros conduct a whirlwind of daydream pop symphonies.
This considered and endearing duo, a haze of black rimmed glasses, charity shop suits, and impeccable manners have now signed to Downtown Records in America (Gnarls Barkley, Justice, White Denim), and already completed numerous high profile radio sessions despite not yet releasing a note of music across the ocean.
Where their sunshine melodies puncture thoughts of despair, it’s all presented with a sartorial elegance and wrapped within The Candle Thieves’ bittersweet casio-led pop. There’s a hefty dose of nineties guitar strumming to the duo’s arsenal and charges a sound that should broadly appeal to a universal audience.
The debut single, “We’re All Gonna Die (Have Fun)” is an exuberant fanfare of upbeat key lines, jaunty drums and a huge slice of melodic, joyous pop music akin to Mark E Everett’s Eels. It sits comfortably next to the tender, ‘Breathing (Just For You)’, the reflective, ‘Bright Lights’, and the jaunty, ‘My Little Room’. Concluding on the 3 part popsicle symphony, ‘Singapore’, ‘Sunshine & Other Misfortunes’ is a crackling, bright and rewarding introduction.
Aided by a constant flow of bittersweet observation, wry sentiments, and firing arrows of optimism in every which direction, The Candle Thieves stake their claim as a bright and refreshing British discovery for 2010.
